CAPACITY BUILDING FOR TRAINING AND RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS ON COMMUNITY BASED NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND WASTE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP REPORT

This workshop was carried out as part of the ongoing RiNaWa project, which is currently being piloted in the four target SADC countries of Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia. The project aims to harness up-to-date Research and Innovation (R&I) for sustainably managing both Waste and Natural Resources within the SADC Region.

BASELINE SURVEY REPORT

This survey was meant to generate critical baseline data for informing the SADC coordinated project ‘Strengthening Research and Innovation (R&I) in Natural Resources Management (NRM) and Waste Management (WM Project that is being implemented for the period 1st May 2022 to 30th April 2025 in the countries of Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia. It is funded by the European Union (EU) through the Organization of African, Caribbean Pacific States (OACPS) under the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Innovative Fund, part of the OACPS R&I Programme.

Report on the Training Workshop on Action Research Projects – Lilongwe, Malawi

A two-day “Action Research Projects Development Training workshop” was held in Lilongwe, Malawi from 10th to 13th October 2023 with the purpose of imparting knowledge on Action Research methodologies to stakeholders, and equipping them with the skills to prepare concept notes in response to a call for proposals under the Strengthening Research and Innovation in Natural Resources Management (NRM) and Waste Management (WM) in the Southern Africa Region (RINaWa) project.

Report on the Training Workshop on Action Research Projects – Lusaka, Zambia

From the 30th of October to the 1st of November 2023, an Action Research Training Workshop was conducted by Skyberry Botswana in Lusaka, Zambia. The workshop's objective was to introduce participants to Action Research, emphasising how it can be used to address waste and natural resources management in Zambia. Expectations were that at the end of the training workshop, participants should have acquired a better understanding, awareness and knowledge of Action Research, well enough to enable them to conduct or partake meaningfully in Action Research for Waste Management and Natural Resources Management initiatives in Zambia. A comprehensive evaluation tool would assess the levels of awareness and knowledge acquired by participants. It was also expected that insights from the Zambia training workshop evaluation would be used to improve future training in Tanzania and Mozambique, similarly to how the training in Zambia benefited from insights from the Malawi training.

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS REPORT FOR DEVELOPING THE GUIDELINES FOR RESEARCH AND TERTIARY EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

The guidelines for guiding of research and tertiary education institutions, more especially, on financial, technical, and managerial topics, in executing research and innovation (R&I) projects on Natural Resource Management (NRM) and Waste Management (WM) were developed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) through the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) to address the key NRM and WM issues in SADC countries. This is part of the Research and Innovation in Natural Resource and Waste Management (RINaWa) Project’s objective on the capacity strengthening of research and tertiary education institutions in delivering research and training in WM and NRM. The development of these guidelines involved experts from different SADC countries. During the process several RiNaWa documents were reviewed, such as the Baseline Report.

GUIDELINE VALIDATION WORKSHOP [ Activity 1.5 on WP1]

The RINaWa project is about ‘Strengthening Research and Innovation (R&I) in Natural Resources Management (NRM) and Waste Management (WM). It is being implemented in four target countries: Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia- “It is in response to the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC’s) Regional Development Agenda and the 2020-2030 SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP). The project, thus, seeks to address challenges confronting SADC as it strives to support the region in attaining sustainable natural resource management and waste management through the respective frameworks. The Research and Innovation outputs aim to facilitate effective implementation of the RISDP actions on NRM and WM. It is therefore relevant to both the government needs and the citizens of the SADC region at large, including the local communities who are the primary beneficiaries. The project targets the research and tertiary education Institutions, government entities, local and national groupings, value chain actors and the public-private sector linkage.
